We took Jake to Children's Memorial Hospital Tuesday for x-rays and a follow-up appointment with Dr. King. We were encouraged that his x-rays revealed the cartilage in his left hand has turned to bone and that the Orthopaedist and Occupational Therapist were impressed with the functionality of his left hand. We return in one year for another follow-up visit, but in the meantime will continue to monitor Jake's progress as we encourage him to use his left hand as much as possible. We also received some resources for support groups, mainly for Dan & me at this point, to connect with other parents who have children with challenges similar to Jake.
On Wednesday, we saw Dr. Kinsella for Jake's 18 month checkup. All good news, for both Jacob & Mommy, especially since there were no shots at this visit! Jake weighed in at 23.7 lbs (10-25th percentile) and measured 34 inches long (90th percentile!) We have a long, lean little boy on our hands :)
Doc asked if he was saying at least 5-10 words, a typical milestone at this age, and we were proud to report that he currently has about 40 words in his vocabulary! And seems to be adding new ones everyday. His favorites are 'NO' and 'Uh Oh', two things a mother loves to hear! (sarcasm :) And he started saying 'WHOA!' the other day (when he heard the thunder during the storm, haha). He has even combined two words already - 'Daddy's Clock', which means Daddy's watch and sounds more like 'Dada ...Clock' (except without the 'L', which I won't comment on, but it is very exciting that he is doing so well developmentally ;)
Jake understands most commands and can point to almost any body part now. He has been doing very well walking independently more often, while holding my hand (into a store from the parking lot, outside to get the mail, up the stairs, etc) and he even walked down the stairs holding the railing all by himself yesterday! (with me right in front of him of course.) He is also feeding himself wonderfully with a fork or spoon! He loves cheese, hummus, blueberry pancakes, muffins, sweet potato fries, ketchup, jelly, turkey dogs, chicken and cornbread from Boston Market and my homemade 'southern style' green beans. We have a few tricks up our sleeves to get him to eat his veggies otherwise he isn't a huge fan at this stage.
Jake loves playing with other children and continues to enjoy his Kindermusik class on Fridays. To get us through winter, we also visit Gurnee Mills frequently so Jake can visit his pal 'Leo' the turtle at Serpent Safari, look at the fish at Rainforest Cafe, and play on the cars. We are looking into registering him for a Gymboree class, recommended by the Occupational Therapist and possibly a swimming class this summer. I cannot believe how quickly he is growing and becoming a little boy!
